Neurogastronomy, the ‘brain cuisine’ presented by Gordon M. Shepherd

Gordon M. Shepherd will discuss how the human brain processes olfaction and taste, through “microcircuits” of synaptic interactions and neural networks, and the significance of this processing in evolution. He will also discuss the importance of the subject for current concerns about healthy eating and obesity. Gordon’s presentation will be followed by a debate with the public and free aperitif.

The event will be carried in a game format and will consist of approximately 6-8 researchers from the field of synaptic proteins that compete against each other on stage by naming a synaptic protein that has not been named before. If they cannot come up with a new one and all jokers have been used, they are eliminated and the game goes on until there is only the winner left.

It’s speed-dating time: Take the opportunity to get in touch with internationally renowned scientists working in Germany and representatives of German funding organizations. Talk about your research career plans and discuss your questions about the German research landscape and its funding opportunities. Different topics will be suggested, e.g. getting a postdoc position, starting your own lab and a lot more. Up to five participants will meet one mentor for 15 minutes at a time.
